NINE BRIDGES

Cycling along Melbourne’s cycle paths everyday I would regularly fall into a sort of trance. I was noticing how the many bridges than span the river adjacent to the cycle path would visually slice through the calm of the river’s natural surroundings.

The transport bridges in particular appear devoid of any architectural embellishments. They stand as a physical manifestation of a solution to a need to drive people and goods through our natural environment to support our ever growing urban population.

Shooting at twilight, the bridges took on a foreboding quality to support their oppressive scale.

What interested me was how the bridges played with the river. One the one hand overcoming the river by allowing the cargo of people and goods to pass over but on the other hand submitting by allowing the river to maintain its course.
