UNDER THE BRIDGES

Starting with a fascination in photographing urban bridges I have spent the past year photographing under and around Melbourne’s bridges and flyovers. I spent evenings and weekends wandering the streets feeling small and lost beneath the vast roadways ferrying people and goods around the city.

The symbolism of the bridges latched onto my mind and started me thinking about the enormous metaphorical superstructures of our Western capitalist society. The bridges themselves are symbolic facilitators of this form of society as they span untraversable environments delivering goods and people and allowing the city’s businesses to thrive. We mustn’t forget that this is why they exist. And yet, underneath and in-between the bridges people shelter. From what they don’t know; it’s too complicated. They can feel something’s presence as the shadows pass over them. It doesn’t hurt and so they carry on in defiance of it’s ubiquity.
